Caledonia Essex Ambulance Service, CALEX is a private, non-profit 501c3 organization founded in 1984, when Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury divested itself of the ambulance service.
Seven full-time and 18 paid part time employees respond to over 250 square miles in the most rural part of Vermont, commonly called the “Northeast Kingdom.” CALEX provides paramedic level emergency, non-emergency and specialty care transports for up to 13,000 full-time residents, workers and seasonal tourists on any given day. We serve the towns of Barnet, Concord, Kirby, St. Johnsbury, Waterford and Victory, and in 2007 will answer over 2100 calls for service, up from 1,808 in 2006. CALEX staffing includes two staffed ambulance during weekdays, with part time staff manning a single ambulance in quarters on nights and weekends.
We provide primary backup ambulance service to 14 surrounding towns, and paramedic 
intercepts to 21 towns in Caledonia and Essex counties. At this time CALEX is the only service based in Caledonia and Essex counties providing paramedic level care. We respond routinely with first response units in St. Johnsbury, Concord, Waterford, and Barnet and utilize a priority dispatch system, cutting our “lights and siren” response 50 % since its inception.
We respond from a single station based on hospital property, and in January 2008 will have three ambulances complemented by a 2007 Tahoe used for 
paramedic intercepts. We also have a specially equipped Ranger off-road ATV that is capable of response for any off road rescue.
CALEX has been recognized statewide in 2000 & 2008 as VT Ambulance Service of the Year, 2001 for VT EMS Leader of the Year, and 2002 for VT 
Paramedic of the Year, 2006 Governor’s Award for Workplace Safety. We also feature a successful ambulance subscription program with over 600 enrolled already, with more planned.
