Notations
As every historian knows, history changes. As continuing research uncovers new documention, "facts" once accepted as authoriative are supplanted by new ones. Such is the case regarding a few "facts" recounted within the text of In the Footsteps of Davy Crockett. I recognize the scholarship of Joy Bland, historian for the Direct Descendants and Kin of David Crockett (DDDC, www.goahead.org), and thank her for sharing the following clarifying points:
Page 42----Margaret F. Crockett was born 25 Nov 1812, not in 1815. Also, David and Elizabeth probably married ca 1815 because their first child was born Sept 1816. [Crockett's autobiography confused the dates during this period.]
Page 80---David's father John Crockett died in East TN. DDDC does not know where he is buried but thinks that is why Rebecca was living in the Rutherford area with her children. The John Crockett referred to in In the Footsteps of Davy Crockett is not the father of David. This John (d.1834) is the son of David Crockett, son of Uncle William Crockett. DDDC thinks it is this David who settled the estate of John and not David, the subject of the book.
Page 202---Matilda, daughter of David never left Tennessee. She married three times and lived in the Rutherford, TN area all her life. A picture of her and her obituary plus an interview with a newspaper in her later years survives. Robert Patton Crockett had a wife named Matilda Porter. This Matilda, a daughter-in-law, not a daughter, went with Eliabeth to Texas to claim the land given to David. Daughter Rebecca went to Texas also. All are buried in the Acton Cemetery.
